Many patients have are elated at the idea of being able to achieve a straighter smile much quicker and discreetly compared to traditional braces—why wouldn’t you be? As your Invisalign provider in Crete, we’re excited to be able to deliver these results, but we do need help from you to make each treatment successful.
Invisalign is a super easy treatment, but your straightening trays must stay clean to ensure that you’ll achieve the straight, healthy smile you really want. If you follow this guide, you should be able to keep your Invisalign aligners squeaky clean!
The K.I.S.S. Method: Keep It Super Simple
When it comes to keeping your clear aligners clean, it’s not as hard as many people may think. Regular toothpaste and your normal toothbrush is fine to clean your aligners with—you just have to be sure to brush them on a regular basis along with your teeth.
The only other product that’s recommended to clean your custom Invisalign trays is to use the specialized system created from the Invisalign brand itself. This cleaning system is created from crystals that work to keep the trays sanitized. Be sure to use the cleanser according to the directions on the package. Soaking your orthodontic aligners for 15 minutes once a week in the crystal solution will keep the devices cleaner.
Other than that, using other products could actually harm your aligners. Other methods can actually discolor your aligners, making your teeth look more yellow than they actually are. Here are some cleaning do’s and don’ts to make your orthodontic hygiene routine easier.
Cleaning Do’s
The easiest way to clean and sanitize Invisalign trays are when they’re out of your mouth. Follow these steps to keep your custom aligners clean.
- Remove your aligners when you’re ready to start your dental routine.
- Gently brush your aligners with a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste, removing any food particles from the inside and outside of your aligning trays.
- Rinse under cold water. Rinsing with hot water may warp aligners since they’re created from malleable plastic.
- Set the aligners aside to dry while you brush and floss your teeth.
- Once you have finished brushing your teeth, your clean Aligners can be placed back on your teeth to continue the straightening treatment.
Cleaning Don’ts
There are some cleaning methods that we recommend you avoid during your straightening treatment.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners that might scratch or mar the surface of your custom trays or make them more visible while on your teeth.
- Do not soak your Aligners in mouthwash, doing so may discolor your trays, making them less invisible.
- Do not soak aligners in denture cleaning solution, it is too abrasive for Invisalign aligners.
- Only use a soft bristled toothbrush, firm bristles may scratch the surface of your trays.
One of the main advantages of Invisalign over traditional braces is better, easier hygiene practices. Without caring for your teeth and aligners, it allows for food and bacteria to sit in your trays and teeth to soak in them. Be sure to care for both your teeth and Invisalign treatment to ensure you achieve the results you truly want.
