Are You Brushing Too Hard? A Dentist in Lincoln Can Tell

If you’ve ever drank a hot cup of coffee or eaten a spoonful of ice cream, chances are you may have felt a weird tingling sensation in your teeth afterwards. Feeling it momentarily and having it disappear is normal; most people experience this sensation on a regular basis. However, it’s a bigger problem when that sensitivity lingers and doesn’t go away.

What could have caused this? According to a dentist in Lincoln, many people are simply brushing their teeth too hard! To learn how it’s harmful and how to fix it, keep reading!

Overbrushing Can Cause Permanent Damage

Many people assume that brushing harder or for longer than the recommended two minutes of time means they’re getting a more thorough cleaning. Unfortunately, this is simply not the case. Plaque builds up on teeth quite easily, but that doesn’t mean it requires a lot of force in order to remove. In fact, brushing too hard can not just wear down enamel permanently, but also cause your gums to recede. Both of these side effects result in increased tooth sensitivity and a greater risk of cavities as the roots of teeth become more exposed.

How to Know If You’re Brushing Too Hard

The best way to determine if you’re brushing too hard is to simply hold your toothbrush with your thumb and first two fingers. The amount of pressure you’re able to apply through this method alone is enough to remove plaque, so there’s no reason to brush any harder. Additionally, the only time you should brush longer than two minutes is if you’re wearing braces. Braces typically require more time because it’s difficult to reach the enamel underneath the hardware.

Another great way to tell if you’re overbrushing is by looking at your toothbrush. If you’re using a brush with hard bristles, then you are almost certainly hurting your gums and enamel more than helping them. Try to bend one of the bristles and see if they flex in half. This trait is not only essential to preventing damage, but making sure you can reach the pockets of your gums and edges of your teeth.

Why Visiting the Dentist is Important

Overbrushing habits are just another reason why it’s important to visit the dentist every six months. The hygienists are very knowledgeable on the best techniques to brush safely. They can also provide recommendations on dental care products, including products that work well for sensitive teeth or gums.

After you have a dental cleaning in Lincoln, you’ll be informed on the condition of your current enamel and if you need any other forms of protection to maintain its structure. These include but are not limited to nightguards, mouthguards and fluoride varnishes.

Of course, true prevention starts in your own bathroom. Schedule an appointment today to confirm your teeth are in good condition!
