What is BOTOX?

The shortened brand name BOTOX stands for botulinum toxin, a specially formulated substance that temporarily paralyzes facial muscles, meaning they cannot contract. As you age, even if you moisturize every day your skin becomes less elastic and flexible; i.e., when your facial muscles move, your skin takes the shape and structure of your muscles. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles appear especially around the outside edges of your eyes, on your forehead, and around your mouth. When these muscles can’t contract as much, the wrinkles in these areas of your face become less visible and your skin looks smoother and younger.
We may call the injection BOTOX, but we most frequently use Xeomin and Dysport, which are off-brand products that accomplish comparable results.
Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?

Although we don’t necessarily have an age minimum, we typically recommend starting BOTOX treatment sometime in your late 20s or early 30s—basically as soon as you notice your first wrinkles showing up.
However, BOTOX’s effect on facial muscles can also be used for more than just cosmetic reasons. Those who suffer from headaches, jaw pain from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, and smiles that show too much gum tissue are often caused by overactive facial muscles that cause tension. BOTOX treatment may be a good option for these patients as well!
The Benefits of BOTOX

In addition to this versatility of this treatment, BOTOX comes with many advantages over more aggressive cosmetic procedures. Rather than endure invasive plastic surgery, you can see the results within a couple of weeks of the injection, and it typically lasts for between three and six months before it needs to be repeated to maintain your goals.
